I'm not entirely sure what to do about Circ Anonymization for closed loans with associated fees.
If we anonymize these does that mean when we go to a patron account and they have a fee on their account, we will not be able to tell them what the fee is for?

Hi Rachel,
If you check the box for "Treat closed loans with associated fee/fines differently" then you can set things up so that the associated loan isn't anonymized until the fee/fine is closed. That way you never have a mystery fee/fine on a user's account.

That first part I know. We don't *have* to anonymize closed loans with associated fees/fines.
And I think you are confirming that if we anonymize closed loans with associated fees/fines, then patrons WILL have mystery fees associated with their account.
Maybe this is more of a question for the 2024 migration folks. I'm just trying to figure out how this actually works and what libraries are choosing to do about it.

If I understand correctly, I believe you are right. If you were to anonymize without treating loans with associated fees/fines differently, it could lead to mystery fees/fines. You're welcome to repeat your question to folio-users@list.flo.org or in the #folio-adopters Slack if you'd like to hear from the previously migrated folks. I believe we also discussed anonymization in the April User Group meeting, but I don't think we specifically covered fees/fines.

Hello everyone,
To answer some of the questions about loan anonymization and fees/fines, I tested the process and found that if the loan is anonymized while there is a pending fee associated with the loan, the fee *will* retain item information. It will *not *retain information about when the item was checked out or returned by the patron i.e. loan information. (However, that information could still be seen in the item circulation history in the circulation log, without any patron information attached.)
It is very unlikely that most libraries would have a situation where a loan was anonymized while there was still a fine/fee pending. If an item ages to lost and incurs a lost fee (and/or lost item processing fee), the loan will stay open until the item is returned. When a lost item is returned, most libraries have set lost fees and lost item processing fees to be forgiven. Only libraries who do not forgive lost fees or processing fees on item return will likely run into a situation where a loan is closed while there is still a pending fee associated with the loan.
